Slaying Your Dragons

Many people have trouble facing problems in life because they are too scared of the outcome. They are always putting things off instead of just facing their fears. It might feel as though you have been slapped in the face. You might have spent so much time worrying about others around you, that you have let your own dragons take over your life.

But if you continue to cast a blind eye to the troubling aspects of your life these things will go from being a minor to a major issue.  We all have problems, and we all need to solve them. As a matter of fact, it could be that the meaning of life is actually solving problems!

Now I’m using the term “problems” broadly here.

You could have a flat tire, or have to deal with the simple fact that you are being out of sugar for your tea. It can be a breakup that you are facing, or some life changing event that is way bigger. It can be your wish to get more money, with a boss you can’t stand. These are things we all call problems, and we all have to deal with them. When we start to feel like we don’t have any, then we create some.

And when we experience problems we start to be stressed out, we are feeling out of alignment with what’s going on. Some of us are experiencing strong unpleasant emotions Others need to get more knowledge about something, but are not sure what or how to do it. Often we are repetitively trying things that just don’t work and then we are not able or willing to take the actions needed.

This realization could lead us into thinking that life feels negative. It seems to be all about problems.

But problems are not negative nor positive. It just depends on your perception of it.

It actually just is life.

So what does the expression “slaying your dragons” mean?

People call things a “dragon” when they fear it.

“Slaying” those things means facing and overcoming them in spite of your fear.

Originally, it started with the real predators that tormented our ancient forefathers. Predatory birds, reptiles, big cats, and fire caused all nightmares for our ancient primate ancestors. We are the descendants of people that rightfully feared most of those things. This is why dragons appear as something negative and fearful in almost every culture. It’s a biological association in the human mind.

We have evolved in art, technology and business skills, but we keep using the dragon to represent the things we fear in our modern experiences. It is a natural re-purposed use of existing things. Your mind uses the dragon to conceptualise the things you fear most.

You should turn around to face those things, and then either be ready to flee, or when you’re tough enough, get your sword out and fight that dragon.

As you know, most dragons are hoarding gold or your mates. Therefore, the person that faces their dragons on their own terms gets the material rewards, and is seen as attractive to others.

So it is now time for you to get out there and slay your perceived dragon.

And you better slay the dragon before it gets too big to control it!

Here’s how I suggest you go about slaying your dragons:

  1. Relax. The how isn’t as important as that you just do it.
  2. Take a step back and look into the logic of the issue from a different perspective so that you really get clear and specific about what the current situation is and what your desired situation is.
  3. Then feel into your heart. What is your heart saying about the situation?
  4. What is your head/logic telling you about the information from your heart?
  5. Tune back in with your heart. How can you align the thoughts and feelings?
  6. Feel into your gut. What does your gut say about this information?
  7. Ideally, at this point your gut gives you an indication of what actions you need to take and also gives you the energy to take them. If not, then take the information from your gut and return to step 3.

As you can see from these steps, slaying your dragons is all about getting clear and energized about taking actions because you’ve been able to think about the situation (dragon) from a different angle. Einstein said it best – “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

When you have some helpful ways to slay dragons, please share them below, we are always very pleased to hear from you.

And maybe you want to watch the lecture in the accompanying video several times, especially when it seems necessary to remind yourself of why its important to face your problems and conquer them while you can!
